What is a Novice/Recruit?

The levels of Novice and Recruit are the first in Community Membership in the Tower (also referred to as Tower membership). Upon obtaining Tower membership, the Community Member must remain at this level for a period of at least twelve weeks before taking the test to become Accepted/Soldier. Community Members should realize that this is a bare minimum time requirement; many remain at this level for considerably longer. A Community Member reading The Wheel of Time series for the first time will not be able to submit his or her name for advancement from this level until they have finished reading all the books in the main story arc that have been released (books 1-12; Towers of Midnight will join this list a month after its release into paperback). Reading New Spring and The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time as well is recommended but is not required.

Novices and recruits are not required to add any content to TarValon.Net, as their primary goal is to become familiar with the organization of the site and to finish the series up to date. Being a novice/recruit gives both the Community Member and the site a chance to get to know the other, with consideration toward continued association. Novices/recruits shall not be raised to the next level unless both parties are certain that continued Community Membership at a higher rank would be beneficial to the Community Member and the site. Novices/recruits lose access to some City forums, but they gain access to more private forums in either the Hall of Novices or Garrison.

Upon entering the Tower, novices/recruits are assigned a mentor. Mentors are meant to be the first person a Community Member should contact with a question. They are informal guides to life in the Tower. They also provide recommendations for raisings to Accepted/Soldier, so all novices/recruits should make sure that their mentors know who they are and can provide an acceptable recommendation.

Classes are also now available at this stage of Community Membership. As a Citizen, one can see classes but cannot participate. Classes are a wonderful addition to our Community Members' experiences here at the Tower, and they in particular can help novices and recruits study for the test to become Accepted/Soldier; however, they are not a required part of a novice's/recruit's experiences as a Junior Member.

Community Members may take advantage of free email and other Tower membership services, such as a discount at Badali Jewelry (which makes officially licensed The Wheel of Time jewelry).

It is at this rank that a profile is added to the Who's Who in our Library. Any questions about information found in one's Who's Who profile may be related to the Mistress of Novices/Captain of Recruits. If after a month you have not been added to the Who's Who, you should contact the Director of Membership.

What now?

If you have just become a novice/recruit, you'll notice that your forum permissions have drastically changed. At this level you lose access to the City forums and you will not regain this access until you are an Accepted/Soldier. Novices will gain access to the Hall of Novices and recruits will gain access to the Garrison.

Please acquaint yourself with the offices of the Mistress of Novices/Captain of Recruits. Make sure to read the stickies at the top of the forum; they will keep you updated on all current need-to-know information from your membership administrator. Your administrator will also give you a questionnaire to fill out, which will then be used to match you with a Senior Member mentor. This process can take up to one week after you have submitted your questionnaire; if after that time you have not been assigned a mentor, please contact the Mistress of Novices/Captain of Recruits.

You will also be given a room in either the Dormitories (for novices) or Barracks (for recruits). Again, this is not an immediate process, so please wait at least one week before contacting your membership administrator if you haven't been assigned a room. Senior Members have access to rooms only of their respective groups: Aes Sedai can see the Dormitories, and Gaidin can see the Barracks. This was put into place in order for Junior Members to have the benefit of a somewhat private gender-exclusive forum. The only exceptions to these are for the Amyrlin, the Keeper, and the Director of Membership, who all have permission to post in any forum. All Senior Members, regardless of gender, are able to see and participate in the Office forums, as well as the Hallways for novices and Gatehouse for recruits. For more information on forum permissions, view Posting Guidelines.

Novices and recruits are not allowed to show affiliation to an Ajah/Company. Ajah/Company threads are set up in the Hallways/Garrison for you to get to know the members of all the groups. It is best to start the search for one's possible future Community Membership group with an open mind. Ajahs at TarValon.Net are somewhat different from the Ajahs in the books. Companies, of course, are exclusive to TarValon.Net, and there is a variety of members in each Company. This time is used not to decide on an Ajah/Company (that is a task instead for Accepted and Soldiers), but instead to acquaint yourself with the members of the Tower at all ranks and to familiarize yourself with the procedures at the site.

Participation in the Classroom is not required but is strongly encouraged, as it helps create an environment with a foundation from the books which helps Community Members become more familiar with the site and its Community Members.

Who is my membership administrator?

As per the Chain of Command, the Mistress of Novices is the membership administrator for all novices and the Captain of Recruits is the membership administrator for all recruits.

The next level of Community Membership

The next level of Community Membership is Accepted/Soldier. The process is similar to becoming a novice/recruit in that you must apply to be considered for the next level. To even apply to become an Accepted/Soldier, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have been at the level of novice/recruit for a minimum of 12 weeks
  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Have finished all books from the main story arc of The Wheel of Time that have been published (books 1-12)

If you meet those requirements and you have decided that you are ready to become an Accepted/Soldier, please send an email to the Mistress of Novices/Captain of Recruits letting her/him know, in petition-form, that you are interested in being raised to the next level, describing why you feel you are ready. Be sure to affirm that you have read the books and have been at your current rank at least twelve weeks. Remember to also include the name of your mentor; your Membership Administrator will be contacting him or her to get a recommendation, which will be read by the Hall.

Once your Membership Administrator has your application and has your mentor's recommendation, your application will be put before the Hall. For more information about the Hall and raisings, look at the What does the Hall look for in raisings? manual. If your application is approved, you will be summoned to take the test, which focuses on information found in The Wheel of Time series. If your application is denied, the Mistress of Novices/Captain of Recruits will alert you as to why not and will work with you to improve your chances for the next time you are put forth.

I failed the test. Now what?

Many Community Members have failed the test the first time that they tried it, and some have failed it a second time as well. The first time that you fail the test, you will be given a week or two to study over the material again. Since you have seen the questions, you will have a better idea as to what material is covered. Once you feel you are ready, you will be given the test again.

Should you fail the test a second time, the administration will find another way to test you. Once we have decided that we want you to progress in our ranks, you are truly bound to the Tower, and not passing the test will not stop us from raising you to the next rank, provided that it is evident that you have indeed read all the necessary books.
